What is DBT?
Dialectical Behavior Therapy (DBT) is a form of psychotherapy that combines Cognitive Behavioral Therapy (CBT) with mindfulness and acceptance principles. The term “dialectical” refers to the concept of embracing two opposing ideas at the same time, which is a key principle of the therapy. DBT was initially developed to treat borderline personality disorder (BPD) but is now used for various mental health issues. DBT helps individuals balance the need for change with the need for acceptance, teaching skills in emotion regulation, distress tolerance, mindfulness, and interpersonal effectiveness.
How do I know if DBT is right for me?
DBT is beneficial for conditions like depression, PTSD, eating disorders, substance abuse, and self-harm behaviors. The aim is to help individuals manage intense emotions, improve relationships, and cope with distress in healthier ways, promoting both acceptance and positive change.
